Molecular Weight:
~38 kDa observed.
Cerberus has a calculated molecular weight of 30 kDa; however this protein migrates to ~38 kDa in western blots.
Immunogen:
KLH-conjugated linear peptide corresponding to human Cerberus.
Background Information:
The cerberus protein is expressed in the anterior region of the gastrula and is a member of the cysteine superfamily. Studies show cerberus induces differentiation of structural components in the head during embryonic development. Data also shows that a segmental pattern of cerberus is also observed in nascent and newly formed somites suggesting an additional role in development of the axial skeleton, musculature, and peripheral nervous systems. Cerberus is secreted in the surrounding extracellular space and functions by inhibiting signaling molecules. Research indicates the neural-inducing and mesoderm-inhibiting activities of cerberus results from the specific binding of cerberus to BMP and Nodal molecules. Cerberus can bind directly to BMPs and inhibit their activities.

Key Applications:
Western Blotting
Entrez Gene Summary:
This gene encodes a cytokine member of the cysteine knot superfamily, characterized by nine conserved cysteines and a cysteine knot region. The cerberus-related cytokines, together with Dan and DRM/Gremlin, represent a group of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) antagonists that can bind directly to BMPs and inhibit their activity. FUNCTION: Cytokine that may play a role in anterior neural induction and somite formation during embryogenesis in part through a BMP-inhibitory mechanism. Can regulate Nodal signaling during gastrulation as well as the formation and patterning of the primitive streak (By similarity).
SUBUNIT STRUCTURE: Forms monomers and predominantly dimers (By similarity).
SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Secreted Probable.
PTM: N-glycosylated (By similarity).
SEQUENCE SIMILARITIES: Belongs to the DAN family.
