Background Information:
HMGN2 (High Mobility Group Nucleosomal binding domain 2), also known as HMG17, is an abundant, nonhistone chromosomal protein that binds preferentially to nucleosomal core particles of mammalian chromatin. HMGN2 binds to the inner side of the nucleosomal DNA thus altering the interaction between the DNA and the histone octamer. It acts as a chromatin-specific transcriptional coactivator that increases the efficiency of initiation of transcription by RNA polymerase II. HMGN2 also plays a role in chromatin assembly and conformation.
