Levonorgestrel Cayman Chemical Item Number 10006318 Description Progesterone is a steroid secreted by the corpus luteum and placenta. It is responsible for preparing the uterine lining for implantation of a fertilized ovum and to maintain pregnancy. Levonorgestrel is a synthetic progesterone analog (i.e., a progestin) and the biologically active component of norgestrel, which is a racemic mixture. Levonorgestrel prevents pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation and by causing the cervical mucous to thicken, which makes it harder for sperm to move toward the uterus. Levonorgestrel exhibits approximately three-times higher binding affinity than progesterone for the progesterone receptor.1↗ A dose of approximately 60 µg is sufficient to prevent ovulation and a therapeutic dose of 0.15-0.5 mg is used in hormone replacement therapy, which is about 1,000-times lower than the progesterone dose.1↗ Synonyms Norplant Formal Name 13-ethyl-17α-hydroxy-18,19-dinorpregn-4-en-20-yn-3-one CAS Number 797-63-7 Molecular Formula C21H28O2 Formula Weight 312.5 Formulation A crystalline solid Purity>95% λmax 240 nm Stability 2 years Storage -20°C Shipping Room temperature in continental US; may vary elsewhere SMILES O[C@@]1(C#C)CC[C@@]2([H])[C@]3([H])CCC4=CC(CC[C@]4([H])[C@@]3([H])CC[C@@]21CC)=O InCHI Code 1S/C21H28O2/c1-3-20-11-9-17-16-8-6-15(22)13-14(16)5-7-18(17)19(20)10-12-21(20,23)4-2/h2,13,16-19,23H,3,5-12H2,1H3/t16-,17+,18+,19-,20-,21-/m0/s1 InCHI Key WWYNJERNGUHSAO-XUDSTZEESA-N |
