This 50 kilodalton tetrameric lectin is composed of four subunits of identical size and has an acidic isoelectric point. This lectin does not contain attached carbohydrate and is immunologically related to GNL and NPL. Amaryllis lectin binds only alpha mannose residues, not alpha glucosyl structures in contrast to Con A, PSA and LCA. Like NPL there appears to be an extended binding site for polymannose structures, not requiring mannose to be at the non-reducing terminus. HHL binds both (a -1,3) and (a-1,6) linked mannose structures, as well as some yeast galactomannans. |
